About GGE
GGE is part of RWTH Aachen University’s E.ON Energy Research Center, a public-private partnership between E.ON SE and RWTH Aachen University. GGE’s research in the fields of geothermal energy and CO2 sequestration is motivated, on the one hand, by the increase in anthropogenic atmospheric CO2 and its effect on climate change and, on the other hand, by the price increase for fossil energy sources. As a consequence, we want to contribute towards securing the energy supply and usage of raw materials in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way.
We perform research for developing geothermal energy as an alternative to diminishing conventional energy resources and for reducing CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. The focus of our work is on regions lacking natural steam reservoirs in order to make geothermal energy usable as widely as possible. In addition, we develop innovative technologies for storing and fixing CO2 in geological reservoirs.
Our application-oriented research focuses on strategies and feasible options for exploiting georesources sustainably, taking into account the particular site conditions. Thus, transfer of our research results into applications has not only potential for strengthening appeal of the local business location but should also contribute towards future-oriented solutions for improving the environmental and living conditions. All-in-all, we wish to perform interdisciplinary research supporting a resource-friendly and sustainable use of reservoirs, as a contribution to a CO2-neutral energy supply. By focusing on development of geothermal reservoirs and on subsurface CO2 storage we help minimizing the total CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.
