Development of a mobile core scanner for IODP


Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a standard method in the oil industry to determine in situ the petrophysical parameters porosity and permeability. Also ODP/IODP is planning to use this method. To develop a tool of fast and non-invasive determination of porosity and estimation of permeability two versions of mobile NMR tools have been designed in a cooperation project(BL 231/26-1/2): NMR-MOUSE and HALBACH core scanner.

We test the applicability of both devices to core samples taken in the frame of ODP/IODP. NMR data is then caibrated using further geophysical methods. Examinations concentrate on ODP Leg 204 (gas hydrate ridge) where for the first time NMR measurements with the Logging-While-Drilling (LWD)–method have been performed within ODP. All drilling and logging operation have been successfully carried out and excellent core, wireline and LWD data also from neighboring holes have been gained.

Thus, NMR core scanner data and NMR logging data can be compared. Finally, conventional wireline data and electrical images of the borehole (RAB/FMS) shall be integrated to characterize the formation in terms of lithology, petrophysics and hydraulic properties.

Auf diese Weise können NMR Kernscanner-Daten und NMR-Logging-Daten miteinander verglichen werden. Schließlich sollen die konventionellen wireline-Daten und elektrische Bilder von der Bohrlochwand (RAB/FMS) integriert werden, um die Formation hinsichtlich ihrer Lithologie, Petrophysik und Fließeigenschaften zu charakterisieren.
